Vaccination: Protecting Our Communities

A printable guide on what vaccination is, why it matters, and how to access it safely.

What is vaccination?

Vaccination helps the body build protection against specific diseases before it ever encounters them. It uses a small tested dose that trains the immune system to respond.

Why it matters

Vaccines are one of the most effective tools for preventing serious illness. They protect the person vaccinated and the people around them who may be more vulnerable.

Vaccination in Bangladesh

Bangladesh's 2023 Coverage Evaluation Survey found that only about 86% of children get their first measles-rubella dose and 81% get the second. UNICEF, WHO and Gavi estimate around 70,000 children in Bangladesh get no routine vaccines at all, and about 400,000 miss one or more required doses. Every child protected helps the whole community.

Why routine immunization matters

Many vaccines are given on a schedule and require more than one dose. Staying on schedule keeps protection strong and helps prevent outbreaks in the wider community.

Common misconceptions

  • "I'm healthy so I don't need it" — protection works best before exposure not after.
  • "Natural immunity is always safer" — getting the disease itself carries real risks.
  • "Vaccination goes against religion" — many Islamic scholars confirm vaccination is permitted and encouraged to protect health and life.
  • "Foreign medicine is unsafe" — vaccines used in Bangladesh are tested and approved for safety before use.

Where to get trusted information

Speak with a qualified healthcare professional, a local health facility, or a recognized public-health authority before making decisions about vaccination.

Finding vaccination services

Ask a local clinic, community health worker, or health authority about vaccination services available in your area, including any outreach sessions nearby.

Hand Hygiene

Washing hands often stops illness from spreading. Wash before eating and after using the toilet.

Safe Water & Sanitation

Clean water and sanitation help stop disease. Boiling or treating water is a simple, useful habit.

Child Nutrition

Balanced meals help children grow strong. See a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

Infectious-Disease Prevention

Hygiene, vaccination and clean water work together to stop common illness from spreading.
